The Runes are the letters of certain alphabets used in Northern Europe between from the first century c.e. until well into the Middle Ages. But pre-runic symbols have been found in various Bronze Age rock carvings, primarily in Sweden. Some of these symbols are easily recognizable in Runic alphabets.  Others clearly represent ideas which were later incorporated into the names of the runes themselves.

One of the main differences between the Runic alphabets and our own is that while the letters of our alphabet are represented by meaningless sounds,  "ay", "bee", and "cee"…, the letters of the Runic alphabets represented actual words in their original languages. 

  


As well, the Runic letters were designed to look like or represent the concept they embodied. While today many of us take language for granted, Runes come from a time when words and letters were considered to have more power.

The word “Rune” itself was derived from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning “secret” or “mystery”.  The Runes were designed to be used in divination and rituals as well as to be used as a written language.

In modern times, Runes have been rediscovered, and have gained great popularity as a divination tool.  But they are more that just a way to tell fortunes. They give us a glimpse into the ways of life of the spiritual sense and connection to nature of the peoples who created them, loved them and used them.  They help connect us to the wisdom of a people from long ago.

There are a number of different Runic alphabets including the Elder Futhark, the Younger Futhark, the Anglo-Saxon Runes, to name a few.  One of the most common types of Runes used today are the Elder Futhark Runes. These are the ones I use.
